Volunteer Code of Conduct

Volunteers help Limeledge care for plants, restore landscapes, welcome visitors, and build a public garden for the future. These shared expectations help keep volunteer activities safe, respectful, and productive.

Work Safely

Volunteer work at Limeledge may take place on uneven ground, around tools and equipment, near active restoration areas, or in working horticultural spaces.

  • Follow instructions provided by Limeledge staff, volunteer leaders, or authorized project supervisors.
  • Use tools and equipment only when you have been instructed or authorized to do so.
  • Use appropriate clothing, footwear, gloves, eye protection, or other protective equipment when the task calls for it.
  • Respect caution tape, barriers, restricted areas, closed structures, and posted signs.
  • Report injuries, unsafe conditions, damaged tools, or other safety concerns promptly.

Respect Others

Limeledge should be a welcoming place for visitors, volunteers, staff, partners, students, and community members.

  • Treat others with courtesy, patience, and respect.
  • Avoid harassment, intimidation, threatening behavior, or disruptive conduct.
  • Respect personal boundaries and the privacy of other volunteers and visitors.
  • Help create an environment in which people of different ages, backgrounds, abilities, and levels of experience can participate comfortably.
  • Ask questions when you are unsure rather than guessing in a way that could affect another person’s safety or work.

Protect Plants, Wildlife & the Landscape

  • Stay within the work area assigned for the volunteer activity.
  • Do not collect, move, prune, dig, plant, label, or otherwise alter plant material unless the task specifically calls for it.
  • Protect plant labels, accession materials, cages, stakes, flags, and other collection infrastructure.
  • Respect wildlife, nests, burrows, and habitat areas.
  • Leave crop fields, restoration areas, quarry hazards, and other restricted zones undisturbed unless the volunteer project specifically takes place there.
  • Pack out personal trash and help keep volunteer work areas orderly.

Respect Working Areas & Partners

Limeledge includes active farm areas, restoration projects, and working horticultural spaces used by Go Native! Perennials. Volunteers should treat these areas as active workplaces rather than general visitor space.

  • Enter production or restricted work areas only when the volunteer assignment requires it.
  • Do not interfere with crops, nursery stock, seed-production areas, machinery, irrigation, tools, or partner materials.
  • Follow instructions from the authorized person supervising work in those areas.

Represent Limeledge Responsibly

  • Be helpful and courteous when interacting with visitors.
  • Direct questions you cannot answer confidently to an appropriate Limeledge representative.
  • Do not present personal opinions as official Limeledge positions.
  • Do not make commitments, promises, purchases, agreements, or public statements on behalf of Limeledge unless specifically authorized.

Photos, Privacy & Media

Volunteer activities may sometimes be photographed for educational, fundraising, or promotional purposes. Image permissions are handled through Limeledge’s Volunteer & Photo Waiver.

  • Respect anyone who does not wish to be photographed.
  • Do not assume that another volunteer or visitor has agreed to appear in your own social-media posts.
  • Avoid photographing private records, restricted work areas, or sensitive collection information without permission.

Volunteers Under 18

A volunteer who is not yet 18 must have the Volunteer & Photo Waiver co-signed by a parent or guardian.

Please review the current volunteer information for your activity, follow the instructions of the project leader, and complete any required waiver materials before participating.
